The Timeless Italian Classical Opening

The Italian Game (`1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4`) is the oldest recorded opening in modern chess history, documented in the Göttingen manuscript around 1490. By developing the bishop to c4, White immediately targets Black's weakest square: the vulnerable `f7-pawn`, which is defended only by the Black King.

Major Branches of the Italian Game

1. The Giuoco Piano & Giuoco Pianissimo (3...Bc5)

• Giuoco Pianissimo ("Very Quiet Game"): White plays c3, d3, O-O, Re1, Nbd2-f1-g3. Both sides maneuver pieces for deep positional advantages in the middlegame.
• The Central Strike (`c3` and `d4`): White builds a broad pawn center with c3 followed by d4, challenging Black's central control directly.

2. The Evans Gambit (4.b4!)

Invented in 1827 by Captain William Davies Evans, this is one of the most romantic attacking gambits in chess:

• White sacrifices a wing pawn with `4.b4! Bxb4 5.c3 Ba5 6.d4`.
• White seizes total central dominance and opens devastating attacking diagonals for the queen (Qb3) and dark-squared bishop (Ba3).

3. The Two Knights Defense (3...Nf6)

Black counter-attacks White's e4-pawn immediately.

• The Fried Liver Attack (`4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5 Nxd5? 6.Nxf7!`): A vicious tactical sacrifice where White exposes Black's king to an irresistible mating assault.
• The Modern Mainline (`5...Na5 6.Bb5+ c6 7.dxc6 bxc6`): Black sacrifices a pawn for rapid piece development and lasting initiative.
